Are you ready for it? It’s the sequel everyone has been waiting for and the ultimate summer blockbuster of the season. What we have here just might be the event of the year. You got mellow with Delta 8Delta 9 THC took you to all new heights. And Delta 10 gave you unlimited energy and focus like you couldn’t believe. Now, don’t forget the popcorn — you may get the munchies — and prepare to find out how high you can go with Delta 11 because, this time, it’s personal. Scratch that; we meant this time, it’s euphoric!

The cannabis industry continues to grow. We can safely say that anyone with a stake in this space has seen the sector evolve quite a bit over the past few years. Since the legalization of hemp, consumers have been inundated with a slew of innovative cannabinoids and THC products, including delta 8, HHCTHCO, THCH, and more. But what is delta 11? Is it simply a fancy way to describe 11-hydroxy THC, or do we have a new compound to explore?

You have questions. We have answers. Get the popcorn ready.

What is Delta 11 THC?

Right off the bat, delta 11 is an original. Like its predecessors, deltas 8, 9, and 10, delta-11 tetrahydrocannabinol is an all-natural cannabinoid derived from hemp. You may be surprised to know that, unlike a few of the recent compounds to hit the scene, D11 was discovered a few decades ago in avocado green, burnt orange, disco music 1970s. Researchers first noted the compound in a study from 1974, and it appeared in scientific studies throughout the Clinton presidency. After the mid-90s, delta 11 virtually disappeared from other studies.

What probably won’t surprise anyone familiar with the recent spate of post-Farm Bill hemp cannabinoids is that delta 11 is found in small concentrations in the hemp plant. There’s a running theme with many of these compounds recently — all-natural compounds are found in hemp but in small amounts. However, semi-synthetic conversion processes that mimic those found in nature allow retailers to produce enough to sell.

Delta 11 THC vs. 11-Hydroxy-THC: Aren’t They the Same?

Now that delta 11 THC is back in the spotlight, many people familiar with cannabis and cannabinoids find themselves confused. A question that continually arises is whether or not D11 is the same thing as 11-hydroxy THC. As a refresher, when you consume edibles, your body converts the THC into 11-hydroxy THC, which is psychoactive but has a faster onset time. Clearly, delta 11 is a fancy way of marketing this stuff in a gummy or a cookie, right?

Wrong.

Delta 11 is not 11-hydroxy THC, despite the confusion of many across the internet. The former is a hemp-derived cannabinoid that causes long-lasting euphoria (more on that in a bit). The latter is a metabolite your body creates after breaking down delta 9. Confusing the two is like mixing up THCP with a PDF — they’re two very different things.

How Strong Is Delta 11?

The research on Delta 11 is limited, with much of it dating back 30 years or more. What we know about this cannabinoid comes from user reports, which are sparse as most products blend delta 11 THC with other cannabinoids. Even popular forums like Reddit are filled with more questions than answers regarding this new cannabinoid. However, we have to fill in some blanks in the few reports.

Some users note that D11 products have a similar profile to traditional cannabis, giving a peaceful, relaxing, and calming high. It’s been claimed that delta 11 THC’s potency lies between 1.5 to seven times stronger than THC, though those numbers are difficult to confirm at this stage. Interestingly enough, many users agree that the compound is highly euphoric. Moreover, they state the high is long-lasting — much more so than other compounds — and that consumers should take great care not to use more than needed.

Overall, we know the following about Delta 11:

  • Delta 11 is a powerful relaxant.
  • It gives you a strong body high.
  • D11 also has a potent cerebral buzz.
  • The euphoria felt from delta 11 is out of this world.
  • So far, delta 11 appears to offer stress relief without causing anxiety.
  • It is a long-lasting compound, so dose conservatively.

How Are Delta 11 THC Products Made?

By now, many cannabinoid enthusiasts are familiar with how new compounds are made. Like similar cannabinoids, delta 8 and delta 10, delta 11 is a naturally occurring compound. However, as with the bulk of products available over the past few years, D11 is only found in tiny concentrations in the hemp plant. It’s not viable for manufacturers to extract it for commercial purposes.

But, like life in Jurassic Park, the free market always finds a way.

While delta 11 is rare in nature, retailers can use a process known as cannabinoid conversion to produce it in large enough quantities for mass market sales. At first glance, the compound may be synthetic, but chemists use natural cannabinoids like CBD and put them through an organic process — one that occurs naturally in hemp plants and that can now be reproduced in a lab — to make delta 11. Ultimately, it is no different from the cannabinoid found in hemp.

Is Delta 11 Legal?

After Congress passed the Agriculture Improvement Act, (a.ka. Farm Bill), legalizing hemp and all of its derivative compounds in 2018, the cannabis landscape in the United States changed almost overnight. Entrepreneurs in the CBD space assumed cannabidiol was the next big thing, along with other non-psychoactive compounds like CBN and CBG. But with hemp legal, CBD fell by the wayside in favor of products that offer people a high. Delta 8, Delta 10, HHC, THCO, THCH, THCP, and others burst onto the scene. Why?

Because they are now legal.

As a hemp derivative with less than 0.3& THC, you can buy, sell, and consume it at your leisure. However, several states have passed laws banning psychoactive compounds made from hemp. Delta 11 is federally legal, too, as it complies with the Farm Bill. While delta 11 is not explicitly mentioned in any legislation, there is a chance it may fall under blanket or analog laws in any of the following states, and consumers should proceed with caution:

Is Delta 11 Prohibited in These States?
Alaska Arizona Arkansas Colorado Delaware
Idaho Iowa Mississippi Montana New York
North Dakota Rhode Island Vermont Utah Washington

Is Delta 11 THC Safe?

The research on delta 11 THC is somewhat out of date — you had to plug your computer into your phone line the last time someone did any serious study on the compound. And even then, scientists only scratched the surface of delta 11’s capabilities — and side effects. Is delta 11 safe? It comes from hemp, one of the safest plants on Earth. No one has ever succumbed to illness, injury, or death from any hemp-derived cannabinoid. But that doesn’t mean that users shouldn’t take some precautions.

As with all compounds, delta 11 may have some side effects, including the following:

  • Red Eyes
  • Dry Eyes
  • Cottonmouth
  • Light Headedness
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Sleepiness
  • Loss of Coordination

Should you feel any of the above, stop using delta 11 immediately.

How Does Delta 11 Compare to Other Compounds?

Everyone wants to know what the best cannabinoid is. How does delta 11 stack up against delta 8 or delta 10? Is delta 11 as potent as THCO? Will I enjoy delta 11 as much as I enjoy THCP? With so many cannabinoids on the market today, comparing them all is becoming a task. But it is an important question. After all, the best way to understand something is to review it in context to something you know.

Let’s take a brief look at how delta 11 compares to some other cannabinoids.

How Does Delta 11 Compare to Delta 9?

Delta 9 is, for better or worse, our baseline cannabinoid. The granddaddy of them all, traditional THC, has been around forever. Those who know and love cannabis understand D9 better than most. Is delta 11 more potent than delta 9? Initial reports say yes, it’s anywhere from 1.5 to seven times stronger. However, it’s all anecdotal.

We’re pretty sure delta 11 walks among the more potent cannabinoids like THCO, although it’s not as potent as THCH or THCP. Compared to delta 9, the euphoria is more intense, and the high is long-lasting.

How Does Delta 11 Compare to Delta 8?

Here’s what we know about delta 8 THC — it’s a mild, subtle cannabinoid. Unlike the super, THC + compounds that are hitting the scene these days, delta 8 is much more relaxed and chill. You may not get zonked out of your mind, but you won’t experience the anxiety and paranoia that comes with the potent stuff. Delta 11 is much, much stronger than D8.

How Does Delta 11 Compare to Delta 10?

Delta 10 is a workhorse cannabinoid. When you need energy or focus, grab some delta 10 THC—looking for a creative burst or artistic inspiration? Grab some delta 10. D10 is the compound of choice for late nights finishing up projects for work and long days of cleaning around the house. Delta 11, on the other hand, will probably just keep you sitting on the couch doing nothing.

How Does Delta 11 Compare to Potent Cannabinoids Like THCO, THCH, and THCP?

Now we’re talking about the strong stuff. To put things in some perspective, THCO is three times stronger than cannabis, THCH is 25 times stronger than cannabis, and THCP is 33 times more potent than traditional THC. It’s the difference between zonked, blitzed, and wacked out. Delta 11 most likely slides right between THCO and THCH (though closer to THCO) somewhere around blasted.

And yes, those are all scientific terms.

Do you want to know how delta 11 compares to other cannabinoids like delta 8, delta 9, delta 10, HHC, and THCO? Sometimes, we don’t want to spend time reading the words of an overly-verbose English grad. Instead, pictures make it much easier to get the point across. Take a look below.

Delta 11 Compared to Other Cannabinoids
Cannabinoid Potency Strength
Delta 10 35% as Potent as Delta 9. WEAK
